The way we watch stories is evolving yet our desire to be entertained, challenged and moved remains constant. I like to think of myself as a storyteller first and foremost. Whatever the medium we all crave a good story.
Performance driven stories that focus on the emotional journey of the characters are what I enjoy creating. Whether it be for dramatic or comedic intent, we are influenced by performance because we relate and engage with the characters on screen.
My first feature film Caught Inside an independent psychological thriller set on a surf charter boat follows the journey of a group of friends and tests the power of trust, deceit and the monsters we create. Nationally released in 2011, it won The Audience Award at the Sydney Film Festival, IF Independent Spirit Award and screened at SXSW to high critical acclaim. It was released in the USA in 2012.
I am presently attached to direct Sunflower with Ben Stiller’s company Red Hour Films.
I graduated from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS). My short film The Existentialist Cowboy’s Last Stand blitzed the international festival circuit, winning The Dendy Award for ‘Best Short Film’ at the Sydney Film Festival, the ‘Silver Hugo’ in Chicago, the Provincial Café ‘Production Prize’ in Melbourne and an AFI nomination for the Open Craft Award. My other shorts, Four Minute Festival, The Piano Bomb Detective’s Last Case and Domesticated Animals all had healthy lives on the film festival circuit.
My commercial work has benefited from long form experience and I continue to look for opportunities to collaborate with likeminded creative types.
I have directed successful campaigns for Samsung, Telstra, Woolworths, LG, McDonalds, Foxtel, Mortein, MTV, Triple J, IGA, ALDI and the Government to name a few.
In January I created a short film that opened the 2015 AACTA Awards starring Deborah Mailman, Cate Blanchett & Geoffrey Rush. That was fun.
I work in a independent capacity these days enjoying the freedom and flexibility to work on projects both big and small.
